In the Atelier: Michel Garcia

Welcome back to watching people work! Sometimes we can get new ideas for solving problems and performing tasks, just by seeing how other people do things. To learn more about the art and science of dyeing, we're watching a few accomplished dyers at work using YouTube videos. In the last video, we learned from Sachio Yoshioka of Kyoto, Japan (see In the Atelier: Sachio Yoshioka).

This time we're visiting the studio and workshops of Michel Garcia of Provence, France. He is a dyer, phyto-chemist (studies the chemicals derived from plants), and botanist. Below I describe videos showing his work (produced by Yoshiko I. Wada, the founder of Slow Fiber Studios, located in the East Bay). Unfortunately, the trailers for the videos are no longer available, but you can purchase of stream the videos from Shop Slow Fiber Studios. They contain lots of great information about materials, tools, and techniques used in dye projects, and are worth watching. Following is what caught my attention when I watched them.

DVD: Colors of Provence using Sustainable Methods

Garcia demonstrates working with two historical plant dyes, madder  (Rubia tinctorum) and indigo (Indigofera tinctoria). He compares historical dye techniques with more sustainable methods that don't use lead or other toxic chemicals. Different mordants can provide a wide range of results. He recommends using common household items like vinegar, lime, and alum as mordants; and demonstrates using guar gum syrup as a mordant for brush work and block printing.

He also demonstrates how to extract the sap from indigo leaves, making a simple infusion, similar to making tea. The infusion is strained and dried, and the pigment is extracted. Garcia challenges dyers to reuse dyes and mordant to the last drop, and work with what we have to achieve dramatic colors.

DVD: Colors of the Americas on Wool Fibers using Sustainable Methods

Garcia is enthusiastic about the dyes of Mexico, and Latin America's rich history of beautiful textiles. Ancient dyers in the Americas used indigo for blue, cochineal and lac (insects) for red, and various local plants for yellow. The traditional indigo recipe used indigo leaves, local lime juice, and organic matter (such as chopped cactus leaf) for dyeing. Over-dyeing was used to achieve some colors, such as dyeing first with red and then blue to achieve purple, or dyeing blue and then yellow to achieve green.

The Zapotec's used plants and cochineal with additives like lime juice to produce many shades of red. For sustainability, modern household waste, such as fruit skins, can be used to produce dyes. Tannins also come from ordinary sources like Quercus infectoria, oak gallnut, and Lengua de vaca, with additives such as local lime, natural alum, and pomegranate. He also notes that the colors produced from all these dyes have a natural harmony of color.

DVD: Colors of Europe

Back to Provence, Garcia demonstrates working with some of the plants available in Europe. He focuses on the historical plant dye, weld (Reseda luteola), from which you can produce a paste pigment as well as a dye. We also get a few shots of his studio with great storage, work tables, and appliances such as a blender, electric tea kettle, and burners. He describes how to extract the sap from flowers such as common garden flowers and the blossoms of the Pagoda tree (Sophora japonica) to make an infusion that produces a bright yellow.

You can see the phyto-chemist and botanist at work as he describes how to use the extractions in combinations with ferrous salt, alum salt, titanium, and gum to produce different colors and effects. He demonstrates block printing and silk screen printing using the natural dyes. He mentions the reds produced by insects from the Mediterranean and the Americas, and from the madder root (used in the ancient wall paintings in Pompeii as well as to dye fabric). Garcia describes using powdered pigments to make water colors, and demonstrates how to make plaster paint for a plaster wall.

DVD: Beyond Mordants, Indigo and Direct Application of Dyes

Garcia reviews some of the traditional methods used to process indigo, such as drying leaves to create a paste that can be used for paint or dye, and composting indigo leaves to preserve for later use. The traditional approach uses lots of water. Instead he works with the dried, condensed leaves and uses far less water. He mixes colors that were used historically for hair dyes as well as for dyeing, including rhubarb, henna, alkanet, and safflower.

Garcia also shares his knowledge of the various natural mordants that are readily available in nature, including calcium chloride (sea salt and lime), soda ash (burned seaweed), shell lime and sugar. The class opens the gates for the huge garden of color that nature provides.

Studio Takeaways

In summary, here are a few of my takeaways from seeing Garcia at work in his studio and workshops. He uses various industrial gas burners (from small to large), which are portable and support multiple temperature settings. He uses glass beakers for some of his smaller dye projects. This is fantastic for demonstrations and dyeing yarn (I wonder how practical that would be for larger projects, like our dish towels).

He uses common items like wooden stir sticks (large and small), a hand blender, a variety of plastic and glass containers for mixing. His knowledge of chemistry serves him well; he squeezes in lime juice, crumbles up clam shells, and tosses in various salts. Best of all is his "just try it" attitude, and the many examples of beautiful colors that his experiments produce!

I hope you enjoyed this peek into Michel Garcia's atelier. It's worth watching the DVDs to see his workshop, tools, and processes. They inspire me to learn more and adapt some ideas for my home studio.

In the Atelier: Sachio Yoshioka

I find it fascinating to watch people work. Even folks doing roughly the same work often come up with innovative processes and tools to complete their tasks! Watching someone else work can foster new ideas and improvements that can benefit everyone. Over the next several months we will visit several dye artist studios, via the magic of YouTube, to check out their workshops, see how artisans carry out their tasks, and learn some of their dye secrets.

Our first visit is to Japanese dye artist, Sachio Yoshioka, in the video "In Search of Forgotten Colours".  Yoshioka is a fifth generation dyer from Kyoto. In 1988 he took over the family business and switched from synthetic dyeing to dyeing with plants and other natural material. The video was produced by NHK Enterprises, Inc. and Art True Film, and published on the Victoria and Albert Museum website on June 6, 2018 as part of an exhibition. The film is a compilation of four documentary segments.





A couple of items especially caught my interest. One was learning about the dye extraction processes used for three plants:

Kariyasu (3:13) – the stems are steeped in water to produce a pale yellow dye for fabric.

Beni Red (5:26) – the safflower flower petals are harvested in summer and dried, and then processed in mid-winter when the well water is at its coldest. The processing is long and complicated. An alkali made from straw ash is used to release the red colorant, followed by adding vinegar. Strips of linen soak up the colorant, and the strips are added to another alkali bath. An extract of a dried plum causes the colorant to precipitate onto a piece of silk. Finally the colorant gains the consistency of fine mud, is diluted with water, and then painted onto paper for use in ceremonies.

Murasaki Purple, or Purple Gromwell (13:30) – the roots are harvested and processed to produce an intense purple dye for fabric. Yoshioka researched ancient texts, including the Engishiki (or "Procedures of the Engi Era", 927), to learn how to achieve the dye. The plant is an endangered species, so Yoshioka works with farmers in Taketa to revive its cultivation.

The chemistry and complexity of some of these processes must have taken centuries to develop and perfect. Imagine the trial and error required to discover and refine the processes used to produce such beautiful results!

The other especially interesting item was seeing Yoshioka's workshop, situated in the green outskirts of Fushimi, southern Kyoto, with its source of local well water and all its equipment. Part of the workshop is outdoors for great ventilation, but covered for shelter. Gas burners provide a heat source. The artisans use a variety of plastic and stainless steel tubs and containers, as well as specialized vats for extracting dyes, and dyeing and rinsing fabric. Some vats include run off valves to release dye by-products.

I loved seeing the tools used to macerate plant material in preparation for extraction, including the large stone mortar and massive wooden mallet wielded by Denji Fukuda, master dyer. It's also fascinating to see how much the artisans use their hands in some of the processes – breaking up plant dye source, stirring the dye pot, moving fabric through dye and water vats, hanging the fabric to air dry. And the colors produced using plant material are amazing!

I  hope you enjoyed this peek into Yoshioka's atelier. I enjoy working in my outdoor patio studio, but seeing his workshop gives me some ideas for small-scale improvements!

Holiday Cooking – Turmeric


Back to the kitchen for another session of holiday cooking with the herbs and spices of the world. Our guide is The Lore of Spices by J.O. Swahn, and this year we're spicing it up by borrowing seasonings from the cuisines of the world. Today we're looking at turmeric, which originates in Southern Asia, but is cultivated in southern India, China, Taiwan, Philippines, Java, Haiti, Jamaica, and Peru.

Curcuma longa (or C. domestica) is from the ginger family (Zingiberaceae) and is a key ingredient of curry powder. The plant propagates from a rhizome, and at harvest the rhizomes are dug up, cooked, cleaned, sun-dried for a week, and then polished. The deep yellow-orange pieces are ground into a powder that is used in both food and drink, and as a dye. According to Swahn, Asian medicine uses turmeric (and recently Western medicine has been looking at turmeric as well). He also warns that turmeric may be passed off to tourists as a cheap alternative to saffron.

Rhizomes are short, tuberous, with yellow flesh. Leaves to 1.5 feet long and 8 inches wide. A flower spike terminates the leafy stems to 7 inches long, with a terminal tuft of white bracts. Flowers are pale yellow. Widely cultivated in the tropics.
